@AVIATIO The hippo has probably mauled dozens of harmless animals to death in its lifetime. Hippos are highly territorial and one of the most aggressive species in Africa.

@ladykillerrr Its not being very gentle at the river bank. It makes some very threatening head motions to get the Impala to flee. Characterizing the Hippo's contact as "nuzzling" and claiming the hippo was trying to revive the impala by mouthing its head is baseless assumptions. Most likely the hippo is further demonstrating dominance, or it is simply curious and playing with the hippo, much in the way a person might poke a dead thing with a stick.

Also, acting all surprised that the hippo doesn't eat the Impala is just silly, hippos are herbivores the Impala would hurt its digestion.

I suspect this is a narrative the nature documentary spun up to thrill naive viewers who have seen too much Bambi and don't realize how brutal the natural world really is. This behavior can probably be explained as territorial in nature, not altruistic. The hippo most likely objected the the presence of the crocodile hunting in its territory. It also objected to the Impala's presence but was less bothered as the Impala is a small herbivore. Look at 0:40, not very gentle or friendly imo.
