The Magic Rotor (By PRPaul1)
About Author
JALCO alloy wheel has only 16 spokes (12"X230). The video clip shows how to assemble the Magic Rotor. There is a video clip entitled " the bicycle wheel generator with magic rotor." Watch it and read the description as well. In looking at the pictures, you should be able to see that the rotor is made of 8 identical magnet holders. The magnets are located above the rim. In attempting to make your version of the rotor, you will take into consideration the size of the magnets that you want to use. By example, if your magnets are 3" in diameter, You will need to make the holder tall enough to clear about 3.5" above the rim since you do not want magnets or coils to touch the pressure bolts. In the video clip, the attractive magnetic force is the only thing holding the rotor together. If you happen to use this primitive prototype rotor model to build an alternator, you will need to replace the wood with other materials that are not affected by humidity. Some people will declare that you cannot possibly get enough power from this generator. I will simply remind these people that power of the magnet is what matters. For very strong magnets, you can consider using motorcycle or scooter wheels that have hubs that are stronger and have stronger axles. In this "lab" model, I used a JALCO wheel that has a yellow label with these words on it: JALCO 6061 ALLOY Made in Taiwan 10" X 203. I contacted the company and asked about the wheels. They wanted to know how many I needed. I replied that I could use 1000 wheels in one year. They simply ignored me. It does not look like these small JALCO wheels were made for bicycles. I found some on ebay, but the dealer could not guarantee a steady supply. Since I could not find a steady supply of small wheels with a narrow rim, I decided not to improve the design. I now focus on using just bicycle wheel hubs. If you know a source for these small wheels, please let me know. The narrower the rim the better Thank you PRPaul Note: If you stop the video tape, you will be able to see the round magnets that are attached on the wider section of the wood paddle. First, I started with a disk. Then, I cut the disk into four sclices. The elephant head shape that I ended up with allowed me to avoid the spokes when placing the narrow part of the paddle behind the flange of the bicycle hub. As the magnets attract each other above the rim, the narrow part of the paddle is pushed against the inner part of the flange. The magnetic attractive force between two paddles facing each other, forces the paddles to behave like levers. I drilled a couple of holes through which I inserted a couple of bolts to help keep the paddles in place as the wheel rotates at high speed. But in this video clip, the rotor is held together by magnetic forces alone.

@Ebdan88 Wind towers are not free or cheap.Deep cycle batteries are not free or cheap and are certainly toxic. In other words, we all can do better. Notice that my devices only reqyire hand tools to build.Mechanical machines usually require precise motorized tools (machine shops). The magic rotor itself has reduced the danger (to human hands) posed by two disks loaded with powerful magnets. There is more to it than just producing power. Nuke produce power until! Now oil is doing the nasty. I
Do you know what Brushless Motor is? If you know we have 2 kind. In. and OUtRUnner. Imagin that you could put both of them into one system. Can you Imagin that? Do you know about the 2 austrilien men who made a working Motor. Which uses 7w. of Power and in the same time it can delever power to two households? Research Brother and use your time into something good for all..... :-)
@faridabadboy007 I used it to make some electricity. Watch "bicycle wheel generator with magic rotor" or "wind wheel power", with a little help from the wind. It is not a waste of nature by means of an oil spill. I am sure that you can do better.
waste..
I agree. However one day, I tried to use a rusted bicycle wheel for riding I quickly discovered that once the chrome eroded, the wheel grinds the brake pads and make them useless in a short period of time. In other words, this design was originally made for recycling rusted bicycle wheels. Thanks!
what a waste of a good bike, lol. just turned the wheels into wooden 4-leaf clovers, totally unsuitable for riding.
What you see is what you get: a rotor for a pancake generator. However, 4 pairs of magnet holders allows you to deal with only 1/4 of the total magnetic attracting force that two full disks of magnet would otherwise deliver. The magic is being able to assemble a rotor without a machine shop. It is rated PG. Thanks
Um... WTF?
Since wood is affected by humidity, plastic would be a good alternative. However, the plastic must be rigid (Thicker than 1/4 inch).Vinyl disks would not do because they are too flimsy and can become very soft in the sun.A rigid piece of plastic that can take the heat will be best. The material that you use must allow you to keep a 1MM gap between coils and magnets. For metal disks, use the Hub'o turbine setup. The Magic rotor uses slices from a wood disk that were also carved to avoid spokes.
can this be made of plasctic ( from old discs =]) + magnets?
Hi! When the wind stops blowing, the windmill slows down and then stops. If the windmill (the turbine) is attached to a generator, the setup is known as a wind powered generator. This is a permanent magnet generator. The part that holds the magnets is called the Rotor. The part that holds the coils is called the Stator. This is not a self powered free energy machine. The bicycle wind generator with magic rotor video clip shows how the generator transforms mechanical energy into electricity.
ok, when foed it stop spinning?
Wigy (short for windEnergy), I thank you for the kind words. Please take a look at the "tomato Cage wind turbine" that I just posted today April 15, 2009. With that design, I will finally achieve the speed that I have been looking for. Thanks again!
Ha! "My gift to the world." What a great attitude! Jeez I love the idea of people changing the world by building stuff in home workshops. That's exactly where Hewlitt and Packard started HP.
On eBay, a bicycle dealer (biketony007) is the only supplier of the wheel that I used. There are lots of different bicycle wheel designs for the same tire size. Once you achieve a1 mm gap between magnets and coils with a certain wheel design, trying to build the same generator with a different wheel design forces you to change too many dimensions. The outside width of the rim is the initial gap. That big gap is filled with the thickness of the coils and the magnets + (2) 1mm air gaps exactly.
I really don't care much about this being used in any other generators o whatever. Your positive attitude is what matters. I smiled right after your "my gift to the world". I will make my own and named P R Paul. Thanks for such a great gift.
Try it, you'll like it. I am assuming that you know that rotors of this shape are used in "pancake" electrical generators. If you build one, do a better job, by cutting the slices more precisely and not leaving any gaps in between them. The simple generator prototype that I built with it had just one phase (11 second video clip). Three phase electrical generators are more practical. Thank you for the "bolt" comment.
nut jobs
Elyo, you are right! I initially filmed a two minutes video clip. However, uploading the video clip took forever (I had a slow connection). I kept making it shorter until it was only 11 seconds long. seven months later, I had the wind spin it (see "wind wheel power" on the generatorblue channel). Then, the light was not as bright, but I was able to show that I could build a complete wind powered generator. Since wood expands when it's wet, I have 2 choices: use waterproof material & enclose.
Would be more impressive if it was a ten minute video of the thing powering just one small light bulb!
i thought the idea of magic was to never stop
It is supposed to slow down unless the wind (or my hand) keeps spinning it.
but its slowing down, it looks like a normal wheel just turning?
De rien! I really appreciate it.P R Paul
