The spirit of CC's commentary at 7:10 is what made the series so good. Sad R2 ended up as disgustingly terrible as it did. Pity R3 isn't a remake of the crap that was R2.

The casualties from the Narita Battle was great and included civilians. The fact that Shirleys father was one of them pains Lelouch and Kallen. But Lelouch reasons with Kallen that because there are sacrifices they must go on. This was what Lelouch wanted to tell himself.
Lelouch obtains information from Diethard about Cornelias next move and attacks. There, he is forced to battle Suzakus Lancelot one-on-one. But he is distracted by Shirleys existence in the battlefield and takes a fall. Shirley was there because Villetta had told her that Lelouch was involved with the Black Knights. In order to avenge her father, she points a gun toward Zero.
